The first meeting of PFWCK officials with Haveri Unit Team and Forest & Horticulture officials

PFWCK Haveri Unit received the proposal from more than 25 schools, colleges and spiritual organizations to conduct the plantation drive program in their campuses and to conduct the environment awareness programs.

Schools asked PFWCK to Plant tree around premises.

As PFWCK is closely working Department of Public Instruction (DPI) authorities and has directed school managements, private and government, to plant fruit-bearing trees as well as medicinal plants at their premises. The state government is observing ‘Jalavarsha’ (year of water) this entire year and as part of this, Pfwck along with the government is taking massive plantation works across the state.

We have requested DPI to issue a circular to all schools and colleges and those trees are needed to charge the ground water table. Hence the PFWCK is working with school management, in association with Agriculture Department, Forest and Horticulture towards taking up the plantation drive, where they will be planting saplings in and around the school premises. For this, we have selected fruit-bearing plants and medicinal plants.

Apart from this PFWCK have sent a circular stating that it will help all the schools to organize paintings, essays, debates, fancy dress competition, skits, quiz competitions and other such activities with the theme of saving water and the environment. We make sure that the school management spread awareness on water conservation during assemblies and other such gatherings. The school buildings should also adopt rain water harvesting techniques. Talking to the school authorities PFWCK also planning to organize events to invite environmentalists who can talk about water and tree conservation. Propose Care Program adopted by PFWCK in caring planted samplings

Propose Care Program adopted by PFWCK in caring planted samplings PFWCK Propose Care Program for newly planted trees follows basic steps about watering, mulching, pruning, fertilizer, and more to ensure that the trees that we planted have a strong foundation for a long, healthy life.

At PFWCK we set our plants up for success by properly planting them, but knows that our work isn’t quite done. Newly planted trees require some additional care and attention. A tree can take years to become well established, which is achieved when the root system is as wide as the canopy. We follow and recommendations listed below, to make sure trees will be healthy for years to come.

Water is critical for newly planted trees. Here are a few key points that PFWCK asks to remember:

  • Keep the root ball moist, but not soaked.
  • Too much water is just as bad as not enough water.
  • Apply the water over the root ball and the planting area, not on the trunk.
  • Do not allow a sprinkler system to splash water on the trunk or leaves.
  • Use an open-ended garden hose or tree watering bag (such as Treegator).
  • Water every 2-3 days and give each plant at least 10-15 gallons of water per week. Larger trees (Over 2 Inch trunk diameter at chest height) will need around 8-10 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter per week.
  • Water more during hot months and less during cold months. Feel the soil: it’s the best way to check whether the plant needs water. Dig out a bit of dirt (not mulch) from the ground under the canopy. Roll it around in your fingers. If the soil is moist, no water is needed. If it is dry, time to water. Simply look at the leaves. If they appear dry you may need to water.

Visit of PFWCK Expert Team

Based on the request by Haveri team, the PFWCK representatives visited the Haveri and met the principals and authorities of proposed schools had discussion to plan the PFWCK activities in Haveri district schools and colleges.

Expert team visited Haveri conducted the survey of the area, land, feasibility, water availability & soil and climatic conditions. Met the horticulture and forest officers and gave out plan to conduct planation drives in district and seek departmental support in conducting activities.

Based on study and analyzing climatic and soil conditions PFWCK expert committees have decided to plant trees in a compound.

  • PFWCK team have carefully studied and observed that many tree lovers tend to simply pick up a tree seedling, plant it any how without first studying the technique behind the tree planting process. We have researched how unprofessional tree planting could pose a hazard to people. We have plant fruit trees well known for their bearings, fruits, in the compound.
  • We also thought plant umbrella trees for the beauty they bring to the compound with flowering.
  • Different trees are planted differently given their different traits that once planted wrongly could thin compound structure and nearby construction.
  • With our research we have found those trees with protruding roots, tall trees and those with big stems to be planted far away from the building because of the danger they pose, knowing that those trees can easily destroy the building from the foundation once their roots reach it. For the tall trees, their branches tend to break and could destroy the building roof or windows.

Our team also met with school principal and teachers and constituted the Environmental Committee comprising of teachers and students and will act as volunteers and local maintaining unit who will monitor the sampling protection and growth under the supervision of PFWCK team.
