North Karnataka is characterized by low average rainfall, high summer temperatures, and rapid dryland degradation. PFWCI set up the Haveri Unit to drive conservation awareness, local tree plantation campaigns, and school-led green nurseries.
The Conservation Challenge
Haveri suffers from intensive agriculture that strips the natural scrub vegetation, leaving the soil exposed to severe wind erosion and drought. Geographically, North Karnataka lacks forest cover compared to southern districts, resulting in an urgent need for dryland afforestation.
Environmental Risk Factors
Habitat loss, structural soil degradation, and seasonal resource depletion present immediate threats to surrounding ecological stability.
Our Mitigation & Solution
The PFWCI Haveri Unit established community nurseries in partnership with local gram panchayats. We trained rural school clubs to cultivate endemic scrub-forest flora and saplings, and planted trees along roadsides, school campuses, and barren communal lands.
